ADD or ADHD Diagnosis and Treatment Metro Detroit

Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) most generally present themselves during the early years of life. Diagnosis of ADD or ADHD is most often first performed by a family type of physician who will then most often refer the child to a mental health specialist who can make a complete and true diagnosis of the child and the degree to which ADD or ADHD exists and then begin to prescribe the the proper care and treatment for the child.

ADD as it is still generally known presents itself early on. Some of the signs of a child with ADD are the inability to concentrate on anything for any extended period of time. They generally exhibit boredom after a short period of doing anything and want to move on to something new. The child will often appear to be daydreaming and unfocused on the things around them. They will often appear to not pay attention to what may be said to them, even when they are being directly spoken too. The child may exhibit forgetfulness or may tend to lose things required to accomplish certain tasks such as school pencils or things they we would generally expect them to keep track of and pay attention to. Failure to follow instructions as presented. procrastination in beginning tasks. The child may also become easily distracted from something even those things they we would generally expect them to stay focused on such as a favorite game or a television program.

With ADHD, a person may exhibit all of the above symptoms and will also show signs of extreme restlessness. They may feel the complete urge to walk around when everyone else is sitting. They may begin talking even though someone else is speaking at the time. They may seem to cause disruptions or display any number of outbursts without reason. The child with ADHD may also seem to get into trouble for no apparent reason or may even become abusive at times.

ADD has been described by some as complete brain overload with several different thoughts or ideas trying to occupy mental process at the same time. It may also be likened to a traffic jam at the end of a major event with hundreds of cars all trying to leave at the same time. As we know, reasonably only one car can get through at a time even though there are several trying to make their way out, all at the same time.

All of the above are symptoms and do not indicate that is a person is affected by these disorders simply because they show signs periodically. There are other additional signs of a person experiencing these disorders and either one may possibly be coupled with any of several other disorders. However, only a professionally trained psychologist or psychiatrist in metro Detroit will be able to truly diagnose a condition. Once they have completed their assessment of the condition and its severity, the doctor may then begin to prescribe a treatment of the disorder. Often, treatments for ADD or ADHD will involve the prescription of medications. Once medicational treatments begin, the child will generally show dramatic improvements in a very short time. They seem to become more focused and can begin to cope with everything around them. They will generally begin to show almost immediate improvement in their school work and in everything they attempt to do.

Your doctor will also closely monitor the progress of the medications and treatments used in treating ADD or ADHD. Often a medication for ADD or ADHD will need to be adjusted in dosage or may even need to be combined with other medications or may need to be changed completely. Medications coupled with counselling tend to show tremendous results over time, and often, as a person gets older they will often seem to completely "outgrow" their condition. Yet, there are others that will remain affected by either disorder for life. Most of these people tend to learn how to cope and work within their disorders to live happy and productive lives.
