Childhood Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurological condition related, in part, to the brain's chemistry and anatomy. ADHD manifests itself as a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity that occurs more frequently and more severely than is typically observed in people at comparable levels of development. ADHD begins in childhood and can persist into adulthood as well. While some children outgrow ADHD, some continue to have symptoms into adulthood.

Signs and Symptoms
According to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders signs and symptoms fall into three categories:

Inattentive Type:

  • Not paying attention
  • Making careless mistakes
  • Not listening
  • Not finishing tasks
  • Not following directions and being easily distracted

Hyperactive Type:

  • Fidgeting
  • Talking excessively
  • Running around at inappropriate time
  • Interrupting others and having difficulty awaiting turns

Combined Type:

  • Diagnosed by six or more symptoms of inattention and six or more symptoms of hyperactivity.

Causes of ADHD
The most likely cause of ADHD is believed to be genetic. Other causes have been implicated, but not proven such as diet, poor parenting, excessive television watching or video game playing and hormones.
