Chemical dependency is defined as a person's reliance on alcohol or drugs. It is also defined as substance abuse. Use of the substance is compulsive and irresistible and consumes the user's thoughts. Use of the substance is more important to the user than any other aspect of life; therefore, other areas of the user's life suffer, resulting in other problems. Progression of increasingly serious consequences occurs. Dependence is a lifelong disease that cannot be cured, only treated and seized. Continued substance abuse results in premature death.
